Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge

November 30th, 2007.

Gosh it's a week since I wrote in here last. The end of another Nanowrimo draws near. Some are continuing on in December to complete their unfinished stories that required more than 50k words.
I'm happy with mine finishing with a happy and complete ending. I have been reading it through, without it needing too much editing, and it doesn't sound too bad. Quite pleased with it.
I wrote it for my drama student friends I completed a course with, the last two years, I have their characters down to a 'T'.  :)
Once I've checked it through I will send them a copy each. (They promised not to sue me)
I am now looking at writing a TV drama (half hour) called "Tableplays" where the set occurs at a table with four or less characters. So the brain is ticking again with ideas.

In the meantime I have been out in the sunshine.

Update on Nanowrimo 2007 Challenge
November, 23rd,  2007.

I haven't kept up my journal of late.  Been busy planting trees, they were given to me and were drying out in plastic pots so needed to get them in the ground. Today we have some rain so I am so glad I got the job done.
In between, in the evenings although very tired I managed to average about two thousand words, so kept ahead of my count. The friends I have been chatting to on the Nano forums, in particular the thread "What about double 30's" who were getting a bit tired, and staggering a bit, I told them I would hold forth until they could catch up a little, although on different time lines.
However with a busy timetable this weekend with the Burt Munro Motor Cycle Challenge in Invercargill, there would be little writing done. Then I thought about the story of the Tortoise and the Hare, and if I didn't get back in the groove I could lose too much time and not win.
Today cooler, and rain kept me in from the garden so completed my story today at 1.30pm. I have no idea how my story reads, but it was just a fun story, rather than an attempt to do something publishable in a confined time limit.
I ended up doing 51,363 words. Now it's time to cheer my buddies on. Good luck everyone.  :)

Update on Nanowrimo 2007 Challenge
November 19th, 2007.

The weekend gone, didn't do any writing on Sunday. I went to a Pantomime on Sunday afternoon, it was presented by my drama class students of whom my characters in my story are based. After the show I was invited to their barbeque party. So that put paid to my writing, they were enthralled at having a story about them and all want to read it.

Today was a beautiful hot day, and I had no intention of sitting inside at the computer, so completed a lot of work in the garden. Had a treat of white bait patties for tea, and set to and did 2038 tonight  mainly because one of the students that wasn't in my class wasn't in the story and wanted to be, so worked her into it tonight. her 'real' name is 'Storm' so I have called her 'Gail.'  :)

Intend to take advantage of another fine day tomorrow outside, and going to another drama performance tomorrow night. Little writing will be done but I am well ahead  for that reason, to allow for a bit of real life in between.

Tired though, off to bed.

Update on Nanowrimo 2007 Challenge
November 16th, 2007.

I didn't intend to write any Nano today, the weekends I keep clear, getting more writing done during the week.
It turned warm and the nor westers tire me physically, so had a restful day. Wasn't feeling well either, had a 'nana-nap' from about 4.30 -6.30 and slept, so must have needed it. Didn't feel like any dinner, so came on here as TV has repeats on as usual. Ended up doing a couple of pages, so that was a bonus, and bought my total up to 40,102.

My characters in the story being kept prisoner in two different groups have all escaped. One lot in the bush the others in their van they found at the camp. Ranui was astute enough to hide the keys in his shoe when he saw their stolen van parked in the camp clearing. While the guerrillas were running around discovering one lot had escaped, the others took the opportunity as well. They are driving hell for leather through a bush track to reach the fire break road, while the others have reached the road leading to trampers' huts.

I've two minds whether to keep going and get the story finished early, or stop for a while and get stuck into my weedy garden. It will depend on the weather, tomorrow is supposed to be cold and wet again.

Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge
November 15th, 2007.

Rose early this morning even though the weather was cold and bleak. Thought I'd do some writing at the beginning of the day, as it can turn out fine later. Besides I had stuff in my head ready to put down. I filled up a couple of pages with my group making a makeshift bush house to sleep in by the stream, and made a small fire. They sat around telling each other of their background.
I used some prep work I did from the kiwiwriters challenge last month, regarding the assimilation of Maori and Pakeha, and how it affected the Maori, how some groups never accepted it. This was told as a story by one of my Maori boys. He told the others about his Great Grandfather, who was a prophet and led a community to be self sufficent and live in the Maori tradition. This story is important for things to come in the next chapters.

The group are awakened next morning by 5 armed men in camouflage combat clothes, kerchiefs over their nose and mouth, and rifles at the ready.  Asked who they were, they were told they are 'The Freedom Fighters.' They are led into the bush to a camp.

My sentence for today:  "Bloody hell, am I dreaming?" asked Brian of nobody in particular, "this sort of thing doesn't happen in New Zealand!"

Have done almost 3,000 words today, so having the evening off. I deserve it, and am tired. :)

Update on nanowrimo2007 Challenge
November 14th 2007.

Another day over, halfway through the month tomorrow. I've been catching up on the forums during the day in between putting plants in the garden, but the wind was cold so came in to get started on the writing. Finished 2,295 at nine o'clock and had enough, an early night to read a good novel of someone elses. Sara Donati she writes a great saga.

My story has taken my group trekking along a river, and are preparing to sleep the night in the bush with basic sheltering.
There is a new turn of its own taking place with a romance in the making, until MC is told her lover is unofficially engaged at home. She turns to her antagonist for comfort, the scene is misconstrued, and then conflict.  That's tomorrow's work.
Doing some research of the area, I found there is a 'Bridge to Somewhere,' so will have them trekking from the Bridge to Nowhere to the Bridge of Somewhere. I'd like to visit this place in real life!

I have updated the story on my Nano profile, and it includes a dare which is naming the chapter, "Wertewhukawe.'

Sleep well folks as I intend to do.  G. xx

Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge
November 13th 2007.

Today, no writing done, turned the computer on about 4.30 and managed to do 3,459 in dribs and drabs up till 10.30pm.
That brings my word count up to 31,265. page 49. It's taken almost a king size block of Cadbury's macadamia milk chocolate to help me through. :)  Now I feel sick as well as tired.

My story stayed on the one person tonight, as the one in hospital is recovering and has managed to contact one of the student's mum and been told they are safe.
Concentrated on the group, after leaving Jerusalem, they are travelling through the Wanganui National Park, through forest area and now in the gorge, (big Maori names and too tired to look them up.)

A romance seems to be developing which even I didn't expect. He wanted to show her something, so she insisted they all take a 40 minute trek along a bush track and discover 'The Bridge to Nowhere.' They read the sign explaining why it was built and not connected to a road to lead to the riverboats on the Wanganui River at the time, for the WW1 veterans.
They turn back to the road and find their vehicle has disappeared. Someone has pinched it, and they are stuck in the middle of remote bush.
What happens now I do not know, or care, I'm off to bed.

Update on nanowrimo2007 Challenge

November 12th, 2007.

Another day gone, will be Christmas in six weeks, perish the thought. I pottered about in the garden till mid afternoon, until it started to rain, so no writing done. Didn't start till later in the day and continued on till 11pm, did about 2,295 words.
It was hard to concentrate, the TV was loud, and I was piecing together some facts to fit in my story. I had to get their positions right where the towns were, and something of interest about the towns.

The group ended up in Jerusalem, along the Whanganui River and discovered their fellow passenger, Hemi, is the Grandson of James K. Baxter,  had to put a bit in about him including a small poem. So it was heavy going, but once the TV watcher went to bed, I turned it down and completed four pages.

Would have been a good day for writing tomorrow, as the weather is predicting, hail showers, snow down to low levels, but I have to take the dog into dog training, so the afternoon is gone. However Husband is teaching night classes,  he won't be home until 8pm, don't have to cook dinner, I will get some more done between 4pm and 8pm, hopefully.

Still a long haul to go, and my story is plodding, not very excited by it, compared to the first novel I did.

Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge
November 11th, 2007.

A nice fine day today, and intended to get out in the garden. I have kept ahead of my word count while the weather was lousy to allow for some time off in the good weather.
Quite a successful day and did all and a bit more than I planned. Helped hubby create a plastic house for my tomatoes. Planted a heap of spuds (late I know but the ground has been too wet and cold.) Mowed a large lawn area, and the seedlings growing on the kitchen window sill ,and plants bought from the fair yesterday have been planted out, plus a small tree.

I didn't do any writing until after dinner, so three pages amounted to 1,321. Not much happening in the story, just that Trish in a coma has woken up and asking about her friends, no one knows, except one was seen on TV at a Maori Land Protest. Clues are being put in place so they can be found eventually.
The googled research has been useful to describe the town they are in, including an old theatre supposed to be the oldest in the southern hemisphere, 'The Theatre Royal' at Raetihi.

Will get a surge on during the week, as the group follow the Whanagui River Road and come across the 'Bridge to Nowhere.'
That's all folks, 'night.

Update on Nanwrimo2007 Challenge
November 10th, 2007.

Had a good day, but not for writing ):  Still needed some exercise, although sitting in the movie theatre is hardly that, but enjoyed the movie. A New Zealand film called, 'We're here to Help', based on a true story about a man battling with the Inland Revenue Department.

Have only managed to do a couple of pages, just over 1,000, but spent most of the evening googling stuff for research.
My group will soon be taken into the bush and had to map out their journey following the Whanganui River Road.
This takes them to a town called Jerusalem where James K. Baxter is buried. So have sidetracked finding out stuff about him, and have decided one of my boys (Hemi) will be his Grandson, and he intends to visit his Grandfather's gravesite.

Tomorrow will be a non writing day, but I get more done during the week when my husband is back at work. So forming ideas until I have a chance to just sit without interruptions. Besides the lawns need mowing, fresh air will be good.!

Update on Nanowrimo 2007 Challenge
November 9th, 2007

Well that's over a week gone, I'm keeping well ahead, while once again the weather is not very pleasant outside, and can expect interruptions in a couple of weeks with The Burt Munro motorcycle challenge on.

Have been stringing out pages in between doing other things. Hang out the washing, think of another scene, go inside write it up. Finished the ironing, scheming in my head write it up, wash my hair, while another idea comes to my bent over head in the basin, write that up, cooking dinner. So covered  five pages at that rate, which totalled about 3,000 words.

Going to have a break tomorrow, give the head some breathing space, Spend a day with my husband, have lunch in town, go to a movie, and stuff.
Sunday we are going to make a plastic hot house for my tomato plants, so will do a few pages in the evening.

My students in my story have just woken up stopping at Raetihi. In the meantime Trish that has been in a coma has also woken up. The story will take a different turn now.
Having a couple of rum and cokes, so storywriting is finished for today.  :)

Update on Nanwrimo2007 Challenge
November 8th, 2007

Woke rather groggily this morning having had my characters running around in my dreams all night. Hard to turn the brain off when writing.
Felt tired pysically as well, and returned to bed, didn't get up until mid-day :) Sorry about that NZchris I know you had an early start at work this morning.
Still no writing as the day progressed, caught up on the forums, dragged out the ironing board, finally got on the internet and checked out the protest at Moutoa Gardens in 1995. My characters are in Wanganui fossicking in the op shop for clothes, and intended to take the inland road to Taumarunui, but they've come across a road block. Another protest at the Gardens, the girls want to keep going, but the Maori boys want to get involved.
Then did a bit more ironing. Prepared dinner, and wrote a page describing the clothes they chose, as they only had clothes on that were given to them after the ship wreck.
After dinner did some more, then my husband wanted to get onto trademe he had a bid on something, so mucked about waiting for the auction to close at 9.15pm.
Still managed to get 3,383 words together, despite the topsy turvy day, and now over the 20.000 line. Bedtime zzzzz

Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge.

November 7th, 2007

Another cold, wet,  miserable day. I feel sorry for the participants in the Tour of Southland Cycle Event. Pushing up Bluff Hill in the hail, poor beggers.
At least writing is a more comfortable hobby, being inside with the fire going. Took the dogs for a run this morning and gave them a huge bone each and sent them out in the yard, so I could have some peace.
My story is still working quite well in three different scenes. One page about one set of characters concerned about the main characters, but can't contact them, then the next page about the one in a coma dreaming about a story she experienced with the main characters, and the next page about the mishaps happening to the main characters.
Sounds confusing, but it does tie in, and only the reader knows what is going on. Until I am ready to connect them later. By doing this has given me an extra 7,000 words, and more to come yet.
My count was up to 3,907 tonight, so added another 93 to bring it up to 4,000, total now is 17,201.
Is there a mood sign for 'knackered?'

Update on nanowrimo2007 Challenge.

November 6th, 2007.

Not a lot done today, had to do some chores in town. By the time I got home, some more chores it was after 5pm before I turned the computer on. Discovered 32 e-mails waiting for me. Some from my thread, "What about double 30's." in the age related threads. I have some regular buddies I chat with, and gained some new friends today, all from the U.S.of A.

I have turned my story into three scenes, gives me more word count and fills the story in before I get down to the real business. I have one in hospital with a broken leg, watching TV which shows the ferry grounded on the rocks amid a bad storm, which my main characters are aboard.
They are student friends of his sister who is in a coma in the neurological ward, she in the meantime forms another scene as her mind is remembering things in the past. Then back to the students having survived the disaster and working out how they can continue their journey.

So did a couple of pages last night, and only one tonight, feeling tired. Total up to 13201 tonight.

Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge

November 5th 2007.

What a pathetic day, weatherwise. Cold, hail and snow showers, wind, and a bit of sun. Generally not much good for being outside. So concentrated on my Nano story, in between letting the dogs go for a run and stoking up the fire.
It took a while to get down the scenes with a ferry disaster, as instead of making up my own story from my head, I need some facts regarding ship's, liferafts and such. I based my characters escape through the experience of a couple's real story that happened during the Wahine disaster, in fact a lot of it is, describing the two wind storms meeting at Wellington and how the ferry hit them full on. I called the Cyclone hitting Welly, "Gaye-belle."  :)

I managed to do 3,044 more words today, so that was good going, but my eyes get tired and the brain gets fuzzy.
It's nearly 5pm and the weather is still crappy.   :(
Now I have to work out what my lot are going to use for transport, as they have lost everything, but still need to get home further north. I guess there is bound to be a 'cuzzie' in Wellington somewhere with a van with seats, to take them all.

Update on Nanowrimo2007 Challenge
November 4th 2007

As predicted the weather being wet and windy, a good day to stay in and write. It was also a good day to have a lie in and read more of a novel from the library, I am enjoying.  Having left it at a critical point of the MC being captured by some doubtful characters, while she is desparately trying to get help for her husband whom she shot by accident. Alls well she has got away in the meantime. :)

It was midday before I settled down to write after checking in on the kiwiwriters site, to catch up on the gossip.

I had to transfer my notes into story form, describing the Interisland ferry between Picton and Wellington as my characters are about to embark.
It is so long since I have been on the Cook Strait Ferries myself, and needed to do some research. Imformation on the  Wahine Disaster in 1968, of which I remember, will be used as a guide to help me describe the conditions as my characters battle to come out of this predicament alive and still together.
Been battling on myself, and managed to attain my total now at 6p.m. at 8,228. Need a break and everyone wants feeding, Will try and get back and do some more this evening.

Update on Nanowrimo2007 challenge
November 3rd, 2007
My total words accumulated to 4,438 by the night before. Saturday can be a lost cause to writing, as my husband likes to trot me off to town, bit of shopping, and have lunch, so I took advantage of him helping me bring some potting mix home to plant out my tomatoes temporarily living on the kitchen window sill.
During the mid afternoon, the computer was on again, and have done three more pages, which brings my total up to 6336 words.

I had to stop and google research information about the Interisland ferry, and stories of the Wahine Disaster in 1968, as my characters are now about to embark on the ferry during a violent storm.
The story has been a bit slow, but drama is happening again, as Doug (Trish's brother) and Trish, who remained in Blenheim rather than continue with the others, have headed into town to get some batteries, because of the storm. They pulled over to the side of the road, during a huge gust of wind, and a tree has fallen across the roof of the car, pushing Doug's seat forward abruptly, and his leg seems to be broken, he turns to Trish, her head having shot forward into the dashboard, she appears to be unconscious.

Tomorrow heavy rain is predicted, so a good day to get stuck into some more of the story.

Update on Nanowrimo2007 challenge
2nd November, 2007.

My story is set in New Zealand. Fictional names are used for the characters, while real names are used for places. At this stage I have included a journal of process, and a description of the characters so far.

I think all the strain of waiting for November the first has taken it's toll. Although I have completed five pages, with a 3,201 wordcount the first day, I feel a little flat, tired and the story seems to be absorbing my mood.
I paniced yesterday, thinking I may not have enough material to get me to the crux of the story towards the last quarter.
After noting someone on the forums stating his piece so far was long and waffling a bit. I realised this must be what happens in setting the scene.
As my stories are about real life, and as life isn't exciting all the time, there are areas that are required to spend time at a barbeque, and sort out sleeping arrangements.
Feeling a bit more  motivated to get going again, and work on a storm brewing that will cause some havoc.
I have changed the name of the story, it is now called "Life is a Drama."

It is basically about seven drama students from a drama school in Southland finishing their second year diploma course, attending their graduation, then setting off in two cars and heading to the North Island to spend Christmas with their families.

Trish, and older student, from Southland, is respected by the younger group, and she keeps them on the straight and narrow, even though she detests one of the students, Samantha. Trish will be dropped off in Blenheim to stay with her retired brother Doug and Sister-in-law Betty. The group will all bunk down there for their second night, and catch the inter-island ferry the next morning.
Rebecca, is 20yrs of age, the main protagonist in the story. A down to earth girl from a farming family in Rotorua. She is loud in her speech, organises everyone, and puts people in their place. Especially Jeff, who played around with the affections of her best friend Katey. Rebecca is liked though, and is respected for her honest approach, though Jeff gets a bit rattled by her continual put downs at him, and tends to do things to antagonise her.
Jeff, is 27yr old, the main antagonist, sometimes purposefully to upset Rebecca. Tall and handsome, all ages fall for this guy, bit of a radical he would like to be, but still a farming lad from Taranaki, he helps on the farm during the long summer holidays. He does part time modelling at a department store, basically a perpetual student, has no intention of getting married yet, and calls all women "Doll." he enjoys his recreational pursuits of booze and pot.
Katey, is 21, went to school in Rotorua, with Rebecca, and are best friends. They both decided when lthey left school to move south to attend the drama school for two years, and continue on for their degree for another two years. Katey is the opposite to Rebecca, quiet, but full of fun, and joins in on anything that is going. She entered a relationship with Jeff, but dropped him because of his lack of committment, she seems to attract the same type of men in her relationships.
Brian, is 24, from Southland, a likable guy, girls think they can boss him around, for instance Rebecca, but although he appears to go along with them, he chooses what he prefers to do. He has a mind of his own. He is a funny man, joined the drama school in the hope of developing a career as a comedian. He expresses with his eyes, and often has the tutors and his class in fits of laughter. He has been going steady with Lili for almost a year.
Lili, is also 21, from Auckland. A vivacious girl, attractive, knows what she wants, and determined to get it. Her Grandmother on her Maori side lives in Southland, while her parents live in Auckland. She is taking Brian with her, after they drop Jeff off to his home in Taranaki, and the other girls in Rotorua, to meet her parents. Lili and Brian are a mischievous and well-matched pair. They intend to go to Australia once they attain their degree in dramatic arts.
Samantha, a 30 year old woman-child. A born again Christian, reciting this often when she feels better than anyone else, (which is often.) Married, but the marriage broke up during the last term of drama course. Her family are in Southland, and was invited by Rebecca to join her family for Christmas to get her away for awhile, to sort herself out. She is barely tolerated by the other girls, one, she has a b.o. problem, and two, she is super critical, and a complainer. She states herself she finds it difficult to make friends. Trish regards her as lazy, and pathetic with her little girl lost  performance, she can't stand her.

Well that's the crew, they have so far encountered a deserted fairground just out of Waimate, which appeared to be haunted.
They couldn't get accomodation in Christchurch owing to a huge concert, so travelled on to Cheviot for the night. Enjoyed Kaikoura but their timing was wrong for Rebecca to experience the 'whale watch' and the others thought it too expensive anyway. They are now in Blenheim, enjoying the hospitality of Trish's brother Doug, and sister-in-law Betty having a barbecue tea, including whitebait patties.  :)

Getting ready for my first nanowrimo (National Writing Month) which starts on the 1st November , and finishes on the 30th November. The object is to complete a novel of 50k words, or more in that time.
I have been doing some preparation challenges on the  kiwiwriters site, to get ready for the big day, when it arrives.
An adventure story called, "Lost and Found," although the title could change as I go along.
Will add some snippets to the journal  once I get into the story.
